The St David's

Library

The heart and soul of any school is it’s library. Libraries are browsing places, dreaming places, finding out places. So much education takes place when children are making choices of their own.” Michael Morpugo

Located in a beautiful room in overlooking the sea, the library is staffed by fully qualified librarian who works three days per week during the school terms. The library is open during break-time, lunch-time and after school for students on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There are a number of weekly scheduled classes and a number of slots available for booking each week. Teachers may use the facility and resources on days when the librarian is not present. The library is also a hosting space for numerous workshops and special events throughout the course of the year.

Our librarian, Ms. Duggan, works in professional partnership with teachers and management. Our organically formed Student Library Council then provides us with an active consultative student voice. Our busy TY library committee takes on a host of responsibilities for planning library events, administration, cataloguing and community outreach activities.

Activities

Out-of-class access is provided during break, lunch and after school. A range of clubs and activities are also available to students during the week including Create Club (which focuses on illustration and creative writing) and Film Club which facilitates screenings and movie-making workshops. The Wrecksperts club where students explore their creativity is a joint initiative with the art department.

We aim to provide access to the creative arts through engagement with authors, poets, film-makers, musicians and illustrators. To date we have facilitated workshops with authors and illustrators such as Sarah Webb, Tristan Rosenstock and Alan Nolan.

Our Transition Years have fully embraced the library as their creative space, creating some French-language children’s books along with some wonderful creative writing and film-making. To date the school library has doubled as an artist’s studio, a writing space, and a film-set as well as a flexible learning space that evolves to meet the ever-changing needs of our students.

Our library is a vibrant, active, and creative learning hub in the very heart our school.
