2nd Year Girls Basketball

On Friday the 31st of January, the David’s Junior Girls' Basketball team played CCM on home turf in the school’s sports arena. This was the latest match up in the girls U16 South East Leinster competition.

There were good performances from the girls within minutes in the first quarter, but CCM had a strong attack. Some excellent defence from Jill and a lot of pressure from Niamh Doherty meant that David’s could climb back up the scoreboard and keep pressure on the opposition. With good scores from Lucy and Jill, they ended the first quarter 2 points up on CCM.

A team talk from Ms. Matthews kept up positive spirits and encouraged the girls to keep up the good defensive line.

The 2nd quarter began with a confident start from the David's side. Ella got the first score of the 2nd quarter and plenty of support and applause from the sidelines could be heard throughout the hall. CCM were particularly strong with good communication. A special mention to Heather's support in defence resulting in passes to Niamh Holohan to get yet another two points. However, CCM attacked back and their defence continued to put on a strong display when David's make their way up the court

Another 2 points from David's meant they were 26-8 at halftime.

A strong start from CCM saw them attempt to launch a resurgence but Moya defended well and scored leaving the spectators impressed. David's teamwork was impeccable and Lily confidently scored 4 points for the David's side. The score was 36-16 at the end of the 3rd quarter and the girls were confident of closing out an important win.

The final quarter was up next and David's were confident as they sent on a fresh set of players. Zoe continued to be a stalwart in defence and barely any shots are let in from the CCM side. When the final minute approaches, a substitution is made to make sure David’s goes out with a score. Siun shoots in the last 30 seconds but CCM steals the ball back and sprints it up the court.

The final score ends with 36-18 and a round of applause is heard to finish.

We would like to thank the coaches in particular Ms Matthews who led them to glory and to CCM for coming up to play the girls!
