On Friday the 14th of March our Junior boys set out to secure their spot at the top of their group when they took on St. Michael's at home. After a warm-up led by Mr. Cahill, all the lads were in the zone and ready to go. Coming off of three wins in a row they hoped to extend the streak and emerge as victors once more.
As soon as the match began the Junior Boys defended well against Michael's. Michael's were persistent and slowly broke down our defence with the opening try. The lads' spirits were still high though as they were very determined to win. It was a tough first half for our lads but thanks to the brilliant defensive performance the score was kept to 14-0 to Michaels.
The second half had a slow start but soon James Ward got our first try this got the lads' spirits back up. It was clear that this Michael's side were punishing with their ability to retain possession as we found it hard to get much ball in this second half. Michael's scored two more tries followed by another try by James Ward in the last minute to close the score gap as much as we could. 24-14 was the score at full-time.
Although the result was a loss, the score does not reflect the game. This was the Junior Boys' best defensive performance to date and displayed real progress. They left their heart and soul on the pitch and performed to the best of their abilities. Incredible defensive performances from both Fiachra O’Sullivan and Leo Hannan helped keep Michael's at bay, while incredible attacking performances were on show from James Ward and Sean Brady, scoring two out of two conversions.
Hard luck to the lads and their coach Mr Cahill but they should all be very proud of their performance.
