LC Geography Making Waves at the Cove! 🌊

Ah, the Leaving Certificate Geography coursework project – it’s no day at the beach… or is it? Earlier today, Mr. Geoghegan and Ms. Bailey’s 6th year Geography classes packed their notepads and sustainable water bottles and headed on their big adventure down to the cove complete their Coastal Studies project. And let’s just say, there was no shortage of laughs, learning and of course the occasional splash (we’re looking at you Georgia!).

The Leaving Certificate Geography coursework is worth 20% of students’ overall marks. It’s a chance for students to put their skills to the test, wave goodbye to the classroom and explore our local coastline, as they collect primary data on a specific geographical feature – like coastal erosion, longshore drift, or the all-important beach profile.

Apart from being the dry robe and flat white capital of the east coast, the cove is a perfect natural classroom. With its rocky shore, jagged rocks and the occasional sandy spot, it’s the ideal place to put their knowledge to the test; all with those Instagram-worthy views to ease the pain. With processes like erosion, deposition, transportation (and the occasional sea swimmer) on show, our students got hands-on with the forces shaping Ireland’s coastline. They swapped textbooks and exam papers for tape measures and sediment charts to measure everything from wave frequency to the slope of the shore.

Now that the fieldwork is complete, students will bring their findings back to the classroom to analyse, draw conclusions and write up their investigations. Stay tuned for more updates as our students continue to ride the wave of success!
