On this crisp Thursday afternoon, St David’s Second Year Soccer team travelled to Greystones United to play against neighbouring school, Temple Carrig. These teams are very familiar with each other after they played in the league last season. Last time, David narrowly missed out on the win but that didn’t matter, as it just made them even more determined to get the victory this time. This was a make-or-break match for the girls as losing would have resulted in them being eliminated from the league. Unsurprisingly, the girls didn’t let this pressure get to them and they showed us this with their victorious performance.
At the pitch the girls began warming up, which they definitely needed due to the cold conditions. Their coach, Mr. Kehoe, then gave them a quick but very productive team talk. This set the girls up with great spirits stepping on the pitch.
Within the first few minutes of the first half, David’s were already leading with a goal scored by forward Emily O’Driscoll. Emily put in an excellent performance today scoring another goal only minutes later. This left the girls with a 2-0 lead in only the opening minutes of the game. But there was more where that came from, Emily scored an extraordinary three more goals in the first half. This gave the girls a great 5-0 lead at the end of the first half.
Going back on the pitch with confidence, the girls were ready to continue this lead into the second half. After giving Emily a well deserved rest, we had a new exceptional goal scorer among us. This was Poppy Smith who managed to wrack up another two goals. The defense were extremely strong throughout this entire match and didn’t let a single goal from the Temple Carrig side get by them. There were also great assets in the mid-field helping the team along the way.
With a terrific 7-0 victory, the girls should come away from that game very proud of the performance they put in. And a big thank you to their coach Mr. Kehoe who guided them every step of the way. Everybody should be very proud of this phenomenal performance!
