On the 22nd of January our newly established Senior Girls' Rugby Cup team played their first ever Senior Cup match. It was a momentous day for Girls' Rugby in St David's.
The girls headed down to Greystones Rugby Club for their 12:30 pm kick off. A solid warm up was done to ensure they were well prepared for the strenuous game ahead. Our captain, Holly Goodwin from TY, made a skilful kick to start the game. Unfortunately, we conceded a try early on but with a strong run from Ella Andrews and a slick offload to Holly lead to us scoring our first try of the match. Holly slotted the ball between the posts giving us another 2 points on the scoreboard.
The lineouts were nothing but top tier from our hooker Matilda Gustafson, jumper Niamh Kelly and lifters Holly Dunne and Lily Esposito. Unfortunately, St Mary's had some well experienced players leading to us conceding a few more tries before the half was over.
We started the second half off strong with some excellent tackles from all the girls with a special mention to Sarah Duffy for a try stopping tackle in her first ever match!
St Mary’s scored 2 tries but the David's girls wouldn't let them out of our sight. After a strong attack and another strong line ran by Ella Andrews we scored our second try. Holly converted, giving us our 2 points. Holly Goodwin made another excellent run and dummy pass leading to another amazing try. Again, without fail Holly added another 2 points on the board.
Unfortunately, the score did not go our way but that doesn't diminish the amount of hard work, determination and dedication the girls showed from the onset.
A big thanks to Ms Dempsey for her coaching along with Mr Davies, Alan and Amy and to GRFC for letting us use the main pitch for the match. Well done girls and thanks for doing us proud!
