This week, our TY students took part in an action-packed day full of adventure at the picturesque Dalkey Quarry. The activities planned were rock climbing, abseiling and orienteering. For most students, these activities were a completely new experience and a way to learn fun, new skills.
The students and their teachers took the dart into the quaint town of Dalkey. After a short walk to the Dalkey Quarry they were met with the instructors of the event. They were given a quick but informative safety briefing explaining the importance of using proper safety equipment and technique. As the students walked towards the rocks, the excitement was palpable.
The instructors gave the students valuable advice on the basics of rock climbing and they were ready to start in no time. There were different difficulty levels so every student, whether they were a beginner or an expert, was able to give it a go. There's no denying that the rock climbing was challenging but the sense of achievement after completing the climb was phenomenal.
Then the students moved onto abseiling. For many this was a brand new experience but everyone was more than willing to try it out. After being secured to the safety rope, the TYs took turns descending down the very tall rock face.
After a quick lunch break, everyone was super eager to do the final activity: orienteering. Each group was given a map of Killiney Hill with different points they had to locate. At these points there was a riddle which they had to solve. They were given an hour to locate and solve as many riddles as possible in order to win a prize. The group with the most correct answers won a nice prize: chocolate!
After a busy yet exhilarating day, the students took the Dart back home to Greystones. The trip was a massive success as it provided students with an amazing opportunity to develop new skills, overcome fears, and build stronger connections with their classmates.
