On Wednesday 29th of January, St David’s 2nd year girls basketball team took on CCA in the home ground of our sports arena.
Both teams went into the first quarter feeling strong. Moya Marrinan got a very early first basket. This gave the girls a great confidence boost to continue scoring baskets throughout the match. After a lot of rebounds, Niamh Doherty secured the final shot that saw the ball go into the basket. CCA scored another two baskets to equalise the match. After the first quarter we were drawing 4-4.
Going out to the second quarter with a tied scoreboard, there was undeniably a lot of pressure. CCA got an early basket giving them the lead. David’s hit back with 2 more baskets, however. This then put the David’s girls in the lead. This was then followed with a CCA basket and a David’s basket by Niamh Holohan.
The score in the first few minutes of the third quarter was 12-10 to CCA who then scored another two baskets. This gave the girls a bit of a knock but they quickly made a comeback. Sinead Siefried played a key role in scoring a basket. The score was tied once again at the end of the third quarter, 18-18. This shows just how tight this game was the whole way through.
The fourth quarter arrived and it was all on the line. Ella Cheetham got this quarter off to a good start after intercepting a CCA throw in and scoring a basket. There was just basket after basket in the last quarter. It was tight right to the end but the David’s girls won with a score of 28-24.
Well done to their coach, Ms. Matthews, and all the girls on a great win!
